Hi,
Rash over the vulva that is associated with itching can be due to an infection or due to a local inflammation
without an infective component.
You will need to have a swab of the affected area tested to rule out bacterial or fungal infections, avoid the
use of ANY chemical substances in the area, take a shower instead of a bath, avoid douching, and keep the area
clean and moisturized.
You can also start applying a steroid cream over the affected area and may need to continue this off and on.
In the absence of any infection or an STD, the probable diagnosis would be of lichen planus or sclerosus, but
the exact diagnosis would be determined by a dermatologist. Some amount of discoloration of the skin may
persist even after treatment and would fade over time.
Both Lichen planus and sclerosus are conditions which increase the risk of development of vulval cancer and
require that you follow up every 6-12 months with your doctor to rule out any cancerous changes.
Do post any additional symptoms or test results here for further guidance.
