osteoporosis, is it possible to rebuild bone mass with calcium supplements and evista.??

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 65; USA; no problems, just the beginnning stages of osteoporosis - osteopenia - but I'm white and small bones and my mother had osteoporosis.; Relevant drugs:evista and calcium supplements ) on Wed 20, Aug 2008 06:45pm :

Does evista accomplish the same thing as RECLAST in women suffering from the beginning stages of osteoporosis. I am white female 65, small bones. I take evista and my doctor has suggested I consider doing reclast injections once a year. My research has indicated a small potential for kidney damage. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. I'm thinking that increasing my calcium and taking supplements and taking evista might accomplish the same thing as reclast injections. Carolyn

Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Mon 25, Aug 2008 04:22am:

Hi, How are you? Yes you are right about Reclast having the propensity to cause kidney damage and also it has the risk of an allergic reaction. The advantage is that it is once a year intravenous injection. Evista on the other hand needs to be taken daily. The advantage is it protects against breast cancer also especially those that occur after menopause. Overall Evista has a better safety profile when compared with Reclast. Please weigh all the pros and cons and then take a decision. Take care!
