large lump on neck

Asked by nez (Male; 23; none; Relevant drugs:none ) on Thu 05, Nov 2009 10:33pm

Hey, I have developed a large lump on the back half of the side of my neck near the base. It grew up overnight after a workout where the muscles around that area were being worked hard. I have had a small pea sized lump deep under the skin where for a couple of years before which has not really changed until now. For the first 2 days it was very sensitive and sore (probably because of the workout inflaming the area) but now it does not hurt and you can only really feel it when you turn your neck etc because of the lump. It is about 3 3-4 cm in diameter and the lump itself raises almost 1 cm above normal skin level. this skin over it is red. It feels reasonably solid (not fluid unless it is highly pressurized) but not like bone, more like a fleshy lump. I have had it a week now and it has not seemed to change apart from loosing the pain which was in the beginning. What is it? Should I have it checked or just give it time? Thanks for any help.

Answer by Dr Bhupinder K, MD (doctor) on Fri 06, Nov 2009 11:48pm:

Hello, From your symptoms, it can be a boil, an infected hair follicle, infected cyst or simply a hematoms formed due to injury to the muscles. Application of mild corticosteroid cream and oral antiinflammatories like ibuprofen/acetaminophen are helpful. Please keep the area clean and apply some warm compresses. Also wear loose-fitting cotton clothing and use an antibacterial soap or mild soap like dove. Topical antibiotics such as mupirocin or neomycin containing ointment are also useful. In case the symptoms persist then oral antibiotics may be needed. Please consult a doctor in that case. I hope it helps. Take care and regards.
