Is my complete bed rest justified?

Asked by poonamkulkarni (Female; 28; Recurring complications in pregnancy. Initially, the heart beat of the child was not heard, followed by a blood clot that persisted for 15 days and then low lying placenta. ) on Thu 17, Dec 2009 06:09am :

Dear Doctor, Currently, I am in the 20th week of my pregnancy. During my 18th week, I had a sudden flow of bright red bleeding from the vagina. I was asked to go for Ultrasound scan, blood tests and internal examination of the vagina. The diagnosis was: Low lying placenta partially covering the os (Placenta Previa). My CBC reports indicated that I am anaemic with haemoglobin levels at 9.90. Others tests that were below level were RBC, PCV, M.C.H, M.C.H.C. The differential count of neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes were above required levels. Results of the Prothrombin test were 15.0 seconds and INR value 1.07. My doctor has advised me complete bed rest for another 2 months. I would like to have your second opinion based on the above findings.

Answer by Dr. Harsh Abbott (doctor) on Fri 18, Dec 2009 06:20am:

Hi, as per your description, history and investigations done, I completely agree with your doctor's advice for a complete bed rest as diagnosis of placenta previa is a serious diagnosis and if not taken proper measures can be fatal for baby or mother. It can lead to some serious complications like problems for the baby, secondary to acute blood loss, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), increased incidence of congenital anomalies and life-threatening hemorrhage, cesarean delivery, increased risk of postpartum hemorrhage. Hope it helps and do keep us posted. Thanks.
