My baby was born on August 24. I stopped breastfeeding 6 weeks ago. At the same time, I began taking Errin (micronor). I have not menstruated yet & I am not pregnant. I would like to begin taking the ortho-tri-cyclen lo that my ob prescribed, so that I have more effective birthcontrol. When do I start? I had slight pale spotting yesterday. Can I start it today? When would I then expect a period? Thnk you.

Answer by Dr Vinod, MBBS,FcGP (doctor) on Mon 14, Dec 2009 06:05am:

Hello, I would suggest you to breast feed till six months and if you have stopped for some other reasons and under the instructions of your gynecologist/pediatrician it is fine. With stopping of breast feeding your estrogen and progesterone balance will now return to normal and your prolactin secretion will decrease and your menstruation will start anytime. You can start birth control now and you will have bleeding during withdrawal phase. Take care!
