Bad Cough?!

Asked by emmamck (Female; 14; Had several teeth removed and my tonsils; Relevant drugs:None ) on Mon 07, Dec 2009 02:55pm

Im 14 years of age and a non-smoker. I have recently developed a really bad cough. It leaves me short of breath and sometimes wheezing terribly. I have never been told by my mum i have asthma. I took cough medicine and it didnt help. We tried different medicine for chesty coughs and mucus coughs. It faded itself to just a wheeze now and again but now two weeks later it has returned worse than ever. I cough and wheeze a lot and it keeps me awake some nights. My friend has asthma and she said it could possibly be asthma can i just suddenly get asthma at 14 ?

Answer by Dr. Rajgopal, MBBS (doctor) on Tue 08, Dec 2009 07:38pm:

Hi, The symptom of cough which is unresponsive to cough medications; along with wheezing may be due to Asthma. Asthma patients may only experience symptoms in response to triggers occasionally. Some patients with asthma present primarily with coughing, and in the late stages of an asthma attack, air motion may be so severely impaired that no wheezing may be heard. The onset of the attack may be sudden, with a sense of constriction in the chest, as breathing becomes difficult and wheezing occurs. Please consult a pulmonologist or a chest physician for complete examination, diagnosis and treatment. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!
