Hi,
Kidney stones can impair kidney function in a few different ways. First, they can cause local trauma and
bleeding from the kidney tissue. Second, they can cause obstruction of urine outflow from the kidney and the
increasing pressure within the pelvis of the kidney can cause hydronephrosis which will then damage the
microscopic kidney structures. Third, if the stone is only partially obstructing the ureter, there can be
backflow of urine in the kidney that can cause infections.
It is difficult to predict how long it would be before kidney function impairment occurs given that you have
not presented an of his current symptoms.
Kidney function impairment can be noticed by alteration in urine color and odor, under-eye puffiness, swelling
in the lower limbs after standing for some time, generalized weakness and fatigue, nausea, vomiting, etc.
Clearer information about kidney malfunction can be obtained through blood tests.
