ear stopped up when I get up for the last 3 days, hurts a little. throat slightly sore also

	My throat is slightly sore, but I have woken up for the last 3 days with my ears stopped up, much like in an airplane before the pressure is adjusted. They will pop when I swallow after being up a couple of hours, but I still don't feel like I'm hearing right.

	Answer by VanessaMD (doctor) on Wed 18, Jun 2008 03:54am: Hi Upper respiratory tract infections which may be viral or bacterial in origin may cause the nasal cavity to produce mucus. Mucus is the clear or otherwise yellowish or greenish secretion we see when we blow the nose. The nose and the ears are connected to each other with an elastic tube called the eustachian tube. The eustachian tube drains and ventilates the middle ear (where the ear drum is located). An infection from the nasal cavity may affect the ears through a dysfunction of the eustachian tube. The eustachian tube is normally collapsed. Swallowing and yawning opens it. This is when you feel the "pop". When you blow your nose too hard or sneeze, the tube opens and this may affect the pressure within the middle ear. This may result to hearing problems. I suggest that you have a complete assessment by an ENT specialist. This will be able to help. Drink plenty of water and refrain from blowing your nose too hard. Also, stay in well ventilated rooms.
