burning Pain/Discomfort and small lump on left testicle

Hi. i recently had pain in my left testicle upon examining it i felt a little lump. i got examined by my doctor and he said that it might be epydymitis so he gave me some antibiotics. those antibiotics seemed like they did not work the pain was still there and so was the lump. i scheduled a second appointment my doctor then did a urine analysis (which came out fine) and had scheduled me for a testicular ultrasound. my doctor then called me the next day after performing the ultrasound and said that everything looked normal that there were no masses and that it wasnt cancer. he asked me how i felt i told him it still hurt and was causing pain. he then said that it might be tissue buildup and suggested nothing else. my question is should i go back to get it examined again because my pain and lump are still there, also the lump is on top of the testicle it feels like it moves almost as if it were floating any ideas on what it could be?.and just how accurate are those ultrasounds?

Answer by Dr Bhupinder K, MD (doctor) on Sun 31, Aug 2008 07:27am:

Hello, There are many possibilities for this lump.It can be a hydrocele or varicocele.Hydrocele is a collection of sterile fluid in the cord attached to the testicle, which is invariably harmless. Left untreated, a hydrocele can grow to a large size and cause discomfort, so they are usually best drained early. Varicoceles are similar, except they are caused by enlarged blood vessels. Both may require surgical removal in severe cases. Hydroceles can be easily demonstrated by shining a flashlight (transillumination) through the enlarged portion of the scrotum. If the scrotum is full of clear fluid, as in a hydrocele, the scrotum will light up.An ultrasound may be done to confirm the diagnosis. It is the most accurate diagnostic test for this condition. Other possibility is of infection (Epididymitis or Orchitis). If the infection is caused by bacteria, your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic.Blood tests can confirm it. I feel that you should take a second opinion from a urologist and get yourself evaluated. Take care and regards.
