bloody vaginal discharge, never had sexual intercourse

	Hi, I have been having some abnormal bloody vaginal discharge which is minimal and non malodorous for about a month now. I am 21 yrs old,have not had sexual intercourse before and i am not on birth control pills. The discharge ranges anywhere from bright red blood to brown discharge. Other than that, I am not having any pain or itching and have recently developed some low back pain (which could simply be related to straining it at work). I am increasingly more concerned as this has been going on for some time and is unrelated to my menstrual cycle. What could be the possible reasons for this?

	Answer by Dr Rowena S, MD (doctor) on Mon 01, Sep 2008 02:23am: Hi, If an egg is not released during your menstrual cycle, this may lead to abnormal bleeding which may manifest as either light spotting between periods or heavy bleeding during your period. Hormonal; imbalance is another differential to consider. Pregnancy and use of birth control pills can also cause abnormal bleeding, but this can be ruled out with your history. If it persists, it would be best to see your doctor for further evaluation or for a referral to a gynecologist. Complete blood count and hormone test may be done to check for anemia or hormonal imbalance. Take care and regards.
