Hi,
Menopause can be managed very well without the addition of pharmacological supplementation of estrogen to the
body.
Management involves individual systems and symptoms:
Nocturnal flashes:
One of the most stressful factors associated with menopause, it causes sleep deprivation and resultant mental
changes such as irritability. This can be prevented by the addition of phytoestrogens (yams, soy, etc.) and
vitamin E to the diet. The nocturnal flashes can be treated with clonidine once they appear.
Sexual dysfunction:
Regular sexual activity will ensure that the normal tone of the vagina is maintained and OTC preparations can
be used for lubrication, if needed.
Urinary disturbances:
There can be a weakening of the pelvic floor and this can result in incontinence. Preventive measures include
kegel's exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles.
Osteoporosis:
Can be prevented by adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D.
Do keep us posted on any further doubts in this regard.
