are there any safe substitues for estrogen after pulmonary embolisms?

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 55; USA; Pulmonary embolisms; Relevant drugs:I do not take any medications other than occasional asprin ) on Mon 18, Aug 2008 02:14pm :

I am 55 and beginning menopause. I was hospitalized in my early 30's for Pulmonary Embolisms and told I could never take Estrogen. Any suggestions dealing with menopause without estrogen or similar products?

Answer by Dr Smitha M, MD (doctor) on Tue 02, Sep 2008 06:14am:

Hi, Menopause can be managed very well without the addition of pharmacological supplementation of estrogen to the body. Management involves individual systems and symptoms: Nocturnal flashes: One of the most stressful factors associated with menopause, it causes sleep deprivation and resultant mental changes such as irritability. This can be prevented by the addition of phytoestrogens (yams, soy, etc.) and vitamin E to the diet. The nocturnal flashes can be treated with clonidine once they appear. Sexual dysfunction: Regular sexual activity will ensure that the normal tone of the vagina is maintained and OTC preparations can be used for lubrication, if needed. Urinary disturbances: There can be a weakening of the pelvic floor and this can result in incontinence. Preventive measures include kegel's exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles. Osteoporosis: Can be prevented by adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D. Do keep us posted on any further doubts in this regard.
