ankle injury... after icing it began to bruise

	While playing basketball I landed on another persons foot and rolled my ankle. That night I applied ice and heat along with elevation. The pain and lack of ability to support weight did not subside. I included Aleve pills and I have tried arnica montana 30x pills and arnica montana ointment. Just recently I decided to go back to high school sports treatment and do an ice bucket. The first ice bucket was last night, the second this morning. After taking my foot out of the ice I noticed bruising across the top of my foot. The initial injury (up until the first ice bucket treatment) included swelling on the outside of the ankle with tenderness from my lower shin (exterior) down to where the bruising stops near my toes. Now there is just tenderness and frequent swelling at the exterior part of the ankle below the ball on the outside of the foot. What causes the blue bruising after icing and what can I do for this ankle I have been treating for about 2 to 3 weeks now?  Download (image/jpeg)

	Answer by Dr. Rajgopal, MBBS (doctor) on Sat 21, Nov 2009 06:17pm: Hi, Application of ice is recommended only for the first 24 hours of the injury to reduce the bruising. After 24 hours heat application is generally recommended to heal the bruising. Excessive ice application may be damaging the lining of small blood vessels leading to the symptoms. Please apply Thrombophob ointment on the bruise. It will reduce the swelling. Please stop your sports activity till the ankle heals completely. Please consult an orthopedician for complete examination, diagnosis and treatment. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!
