When to recheck protein in urine if on steriods for mono.

Asked by moprincess29 (Female; 16; USA; Had UA on 8/23 with high amounts of protein in urine. Negative for anything else. Patient conplaining of pain with urination. Was given a sulfa base abx. Came down and was dx for Mononucleosis 1 week later. Put on Prednisone to treat closing airway. Need to recheck protein in urine but still on steroids. Concerned Mono may have caused inflammation in the kidneys want to make sure being on steroids won't cause a false negative test for protein. Is it okay to recheck while on steroids. ) on Fri 12, Sep 2008 01:31pm :

I have a 16 year old daughter who had a UA done to check for a UTI. The UA came back with no bacteria or WBC but with high amounts of protein in her urine. A week later she came down with mononucleosis. She was put on prednisone. How long after taking prednisone should we wait to recheck protein levels? I'm concerned mono could be causing the kidney inflammation and the prednisone could give a false negative UA for protein. Especially if this is an autoimmune condition.

Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Thu 08, Jan 2009 05:41am:

Hi, Thanks for writing in. Prednisone will actually decrease the protein levels in urine since it will reduce the kidney inflammation. You can get the urine analysis done whenever the doctor asks you to as prednisone will not give a false positive test. Hope this answers your question.
