	When I cough, my throat closes up and I gag/fight for air to pass. I'm on Clarinex D 800mg. Why do I gag/fight to breathe?

	Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Mon 26, Jan 2009 10:56pm: Gagging while coughing occurs usually when one has a dry cough which can occur due to allergies. Gagging occurs due to dry and sore throat. Apart from allergies, asthma, acid reflux and post nasal drip can also cause gagging while coughing. It is important that you undergo a clinical evaluation to rule out these conditions. Make sure you maintain your fluid intake as water will reduce the dryness in the throat.
