Hello, Welcome to AMD forum. The body usually produces some amount of mucus discharge to keep the vaginal
mucosa moist and healthy. This white discharge may be considered normal until it is odorless & if not
associated with color change or itching. Usually under the hormonal influences, this discharge becomes
noticeable especially when there is major change in the body hormonal level. Mirena which you are using is an
intra uterine contraceptive device and steadily releases levonorgestrel (a form of progesterone, female sex
hormone) and prevents ovulation. It helps in contraception by increasing the thickness (viscosity) of the
uterine mucus in attempt to make environment difficult for sperms to swim thereby decreasing the probability
of fertilization of ovum (egg). Therefore, the thick mucus discharge which you are experiencing now days could
be due to sudden increase in hormone (progesterone) level released by the device. If the secretion is having
any kind of odor then possibility of infection of the womb lining is also there as Mirena is found most of the
times culprit in this regard. I would advice a check-up by your gynecologist for any below listed symptoms as
they can be due to side-effects of Mirena. In addition, clinical examination with a swab test can help to rule
out any pathology. Usually other side-effects of Mirena that requires medical attention are allergy, odorous
vaginal discharge, lack of or prolonged menstrual periods, dizziness, pain or tenderness in the abdomen,
shortening of breathe, chest pain etc. Additionally, as you had history of abnormal cell changes in the past
so I would advice a Pap smear test to make sure that there is no recurrence of further changes. Hope this
helps. Do write to us in case of additional doubts. Take care & Regards.
