Severe cough with whistling, static sound when laying down.

	Asked by Unregistered (Female; 61; Unicuspid aortic valve, replaced with St. Judes valve in 1997. History of broncitis. Never had pneumonia.; Relevant drugs:Coumadin, lipitor, lopressor, lotensin, premarin, dyazide, tylenol, effexor. ) on Mon 16, Jun 2008 08:18am :
	Iam having a fairly severe cough, which keeps me awake at night, but the last two nights when I breathe out, I hear a whistling, static sound coming from my chest. I have no fever and I feel okay when I am not coughing. I usually get Bronchitis when I get a cold, but I am not coughing up much and it's not green, just light yellow. I have never had this sound coming from my chest when I breathe before. I also have a St. Judes aortic valve. Should the whistling sound be a concern for me? Thank you

	Answer by Dr Bobby V, MD (doctor) on Mon 16, Jun 2008 09:51am: Hi, You have described what internists call a "monophonic wheeze". This whistling sound means there is a partially obstructed airway, probably due to the lung infection secretion. Given the fact that you have had a cardiac valve replacement surgery, I would tilt on the side of caution , and suggest that you seek an appointment with your doctor just to ensure that all is ok, and that the current chest infection is trivial. If your doctor feels the need for it, he or she may prescribe antibiotics. I wish you all the very best!
