Seasonique birth control for endometriosis causing blood clots and leading to death

	I am on Seasonique birth control and I just heard that it causes blood clots and can lead to death. Is this true?

	Answer by Dr.Bhumika Aggarwal (doctor) on Thu 19, Jun 2008 10:28am: Hi, All medications have certain side effects - but the rationale behind taking medication is to weigh the benefits with respect to the side effects. And most importantly, side effects are not seen in majority of the cases and your doctor will warn you in advance in case of any serious / life threatening side effects. Seasonique contains a combination of female hormones that prevent ovulation. 'Taking hormones can increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack, especially if you smoke and are older than 35.' But this is not the rule, and it is safe if you are taking the drug under medical supervision. Do follow up with your doctor regularly. 'Do not use Seasonique if you are pregnant or if you have recently had a baby. Do not use Seasonique if you have: a history of stroke or blood clot, circulation problems, breast or uterine cancer, abnormal vaginal bleeding, liver disease or liver cancer, severe high blood pressure, migraine headaches, a heart valve disorder, or a history of jaundice caused by birth control pills.' http://www.drugs.com/seasonique.html 'Before using Seasonique, tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions. *high blood pressure, heart disease, congestive heart failure, angina (chest pain), or a history of heart attack; *high cholesterol or if you are overweight; *a history of depression; *gallbladder disease; *diabetes; *seizures or epilepsy; *a history of irregular menstrual cycles; or *a history of fibrocystic breast disease, lumps, nodules, or an abnormal mammogram.
