Removal of ovarian cysts with calcification, and the risk of losing ovaries in removal.

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 40; USA; ) on Thu 14, Aug 2008 10:25pm

I have ovarian cysts with calcification on both of my ovaries.I am scheduled for surgery to remove these on next Friday.I had surgery a little less than two years ago to remove a large ovarian cyst and all went well, my doctor was able to remove the cyst without having to take the ovary. I am concerned about losing one or both ovaries with this current surgery, are the risks of having to remove the ovary higher when there is calcification in the cyst?

Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Fri 15, Aug 2008 05:52am:

Hi, How are you? Calcification is usually seen in dermoid cysts which are complex ovarian cyst. They have increased chances of rupture so should always be removed. If it is a dermoid cyst that you have the ovaries most likely will be removed because there is a chance that they become malignant. Please discuss this with your OBGYN and let us know if you need more information. Take care!
