Natural cure for toe, foot, leg cramps possibly caused by salt intake

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 46; USA; No major concerns. Only surgeries were tubal ligation 18 years ago and hysterectomy 2004. Have history of elevated AST and ALT liver enzymes; cause has not been determined. Liver biopsy in 2005 was normal.; Relevant drugs:None. Use Solar-Ray vitamin and mineral supplements. ) on Tue 05, Aug 2008 09:26pm :

I started having cramps in my toes this evening, then my whole foot, and then up the outside of my lower leg. Early in the evening, I ate a lot of salt-and-pepper potato chips. I have drank a gallon of water today, so its not dehydration. I would like to know if salt is the cause; I have noticed cramping before and usually avoid salt, but it seems that I can always trace back a salty food item close to the cramping time... After the cramps begin, what is a natural method of relief?

Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Wed 06, Aug 2008 05:12am:

Hi, How are you? There are six main causes of muscle cramps. They are hyperflexion, inadequate oxygenation, dehydration, low salt intake, low calcium levels and exposure to large changes in temperature. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cramp High salt intake is not known to cause muscle cramps. Electrolyte disturbances like low potassium and low calcium can cause cramps. Muscle cramps can be treated by massaging the affected muscles, application of alternate heat and ice therapy. Heat will increase the blood flow to the affected part and ice will have to relax the muscles. Fluid intake should also be maintained at all times. Take care!
