Mesh Tape Removal Procedure and later side effects

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 47; USA; Nothing Notable Healthy Adult Female; Relevant drugs:Nothing Notable Healthy Adult Female ) on Wed 06, Aug 2008 07:06pm :

Had a mesh tape surgical procedure to hold my bladder in place, later the tape became infected and was removed surgically. Now I have the pain similar to the original infection pain. It has been 2 years since procedure of removal, is it normal to expect continual discomfort in the leg where the tape was removed?

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD (doctor) on Wed 06, Aug 2008 10:45pm:

Hi there. Any form of surgery to the body can indeed cause damage one way or another to the tissues and nerves surrounding the areas involved. Infection would likewise cause some damage to nerves and tissues causing a number of symptoms. In your situation, the previous injuries to the nerves, whether from the surgery or from the infection, may indeed have long term effects, and this discomfort may be one of the undersirable effects. Aside from long term effects of the procedures, this discomfort may also be related to the primary problem for which the mesh was put in the first place (pelvic floor weakness, etc.). Regards.
