Is taking an 800mg ibuprofen pill once a day a dangerous thing to do?

Asked by Unregistered (Male; 59; USA; Ankle and knee surgeries.; Relevant drugs:ibuprofen ) on Sun 17, Aug 2008 10:18am :

I am a white, 59 yearold male in good health. Because of a fused ankle from an accident in 1970 if have severe arthritis in the joint. I have started taking 1 800mg ibuprofen pill in the morning with food. It alleviates the pain for most of the day. My cohorts say this is too strong a dose and could cause bleeding ulcers. Your opinion, please.

Hi, I am glad that you have asked a question here and I will be happy to help. Ibuprofen is a NSAID which is generally accepted as an alternative to Aspirin for pain. It is used in various conditions with a dose range of 400-1200 mg per day. Like other NSAIDS, there is a risk for the development of peptic disease, however, the dosage of 800 mg may be considered ok if taken with precautions and under guidance of a doctor. There may be other side effects of the drug including, diarrhea, epistaxis etc., which may not be dose dependent. I hope this answer helped. let me know if you may need more information.
