Hi,
Hormonal imbalance, polyps or fibroids in the uterus, cancer of the uterus and infection of the cervix and
sometimes a thyroid problem may cause abnormal uterine bleeding. It is good that your ultrasound rules out
endometriosis, ovarian cysts,or fibriods.
Aside from ultrasound, endometrial biopsy may be done wherein a piece of the uterine lining is taken out and
sent to a lab for testing and may show changes in the cells and rule out the presence of cancer cells. Another
test is a hysteroscopy where a thin tube with a tiny camera in it is put into your uterus for visualization. A
biopsy may also obtained if anything abnormal shows up. On the other hand, dilatation and curettage, is a
procedure in which the opening of your cervix is stretched and a lining of the uterus is scraped and tested
for abnormal tissue. This may be done both to find out the problem and to treat the bleeding.
The treatment usually depends on the cause. If the cause is a hormone imbalance, your doctor may suggest you
take birth control pills or progesterone as in your case. However, other causes may have to be ruled out such
as thyroid problems as well as endometrial hyperplasia.
Take care and regards.
