How do I go about weaning off of Zoloft? This has been my second time on an anti-depressent. The first time was over 10 years ago and I was on it for a little over a year. I was off it for several years and have been back on Zoloft for a little over 5 years now. I've done very well on it and am at a very good place in my life, but would like to wean off. I would just like a rough timeline of how I should wean off this time around...I've looked up several suggestions, but thought this would be a good source. Thanks!

Answer by Dr Vinod, MBBS,FcGP (doctor) on Fri 20, Nov 2009 11:02am:

Dear scully4946, Zoloft has a half-life of about one day. This means half of the drug would be metabolized in one day. The next day, half of the remaining drug would be gone. Therefore, in two days one-fourth of the original drug amount would still remain in your system. Consume half the dose for a week and after that take quarter dose and then you can stop. With any symptoms I would suggest you to talk with your physician. Take care!
