First Depro-Provera injection and the necessity of back-up contraceptives

	I have read that if one gets her first Depro-Provera shot within the first five days of her period she does not have to use back up-up contraceptives to prevent pregnancy. I got my first Depro-provera shot yesterday (one day before I was supposed to start my period), and did not take birth control pills last month. Do I have to use back-up contraceptives? If so, for how long?

	Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Fri 08, Aug 2008 05:21am: Hi, How are you? Depo provera takes 7 days to take effect if given after the first four days of the cycle. It is effective immediately if given in the first four days of the cycle. Since you have depo provera on the 27th or 28th day of the cycle you have to take birth control pills for at least 7 days. Please cross check with your OBGYN as the duration of menstrual cycle varies from person to person. Take care!
