Bad allergic reaction to Lavendar and still having some symptoms including swollen lip and palms of hands itching really, really bad.

	I was breaking out because I was allergic to Lavender. I have changed back to all detergents I used to use and I am no longer breaking out, but I still will get a swollen lip and my hands will itch really, really bad. The doctor suggested that I have some blood work done to determine if there is any type of auto immune symptoms that need to be addressed. What do you suggest?

	Answer by VanessaMD (doctor) on Tue 17, Jun 2008 07:05am: Hi Is there any notable rash on the hands? If a red weeping rash is present then contact allergic dermatitis may be a differential. There are persons who are far more sensitive and reactive to certain chemicals or substances and they may be described as atopic. Further evaluation to rule out other conditions may be necessary if the swollen lips and itchy hands have persisted long after you have stopped using the irritant or allergen (soap). Have you taken any medications for this? Have you been prescribe any corticosteroid or antihistamines? Some immune disorders like Crohn’s disease may present with swollen lips or tongue as in cases wherein the upper gastrointestinal tract is involved. However, this does not sound like your case. Crohn’s disease is associated with a change in bowel movement. It may manifest as bleeding and loose stools. You may discuss with your physician what his working diagnosis is with regards to your case. If the lip swelling and itchy hands do not respond to antihistamines and corticosteroids, then further evaluation may be necessary.
