My dad is an alcoholic. He is finally wanting to quit, but will only do it his way. He believes that starting out cold turkey with no professional help for 30 days is good enough. He refuses to go to rehab or talk to a professional. He also believes having a beer or two in the future is ok. How do I make him realize what he is trying to do is not going to work?

Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Fri 18, Jul 2008 06:52am:

Hi, The first step towards recovering from an any addiction is an inclination to quit. Your father already has that, I would suggest you give him a chance and see how far he can get on his own. Also please remember the rehab will be a gradual process and he may take a few drinks initially due to intense urge. Do keep us posted and let us know if you need more information!
