Abscesses are usually caused by specific microorganisms that invade the tissues, often by way of small wounds
or breaks in the skin.
There are at least three types of dental abscesses that differs with their point of origin. It is important to
determine which type of abscess is present so that the appropriate treatment may be given. The pus must be
drained and antibiotics may be prescribed if systemic symptoms such as fever and swelling in the lymph glands
are present. If it is severe, the tooth may even be removed. Cefuroxime is usually indicated for tonsillitis,
UTI, otitis media and pneumonia, and not for abscesses. Talk to your doctor which is best antibiotic for you,
especially if you have drug allergies.
