vsd repair patient and type I dibetic wants medical alert tatoo

	I have a 20 year old son. He has had a ventricular septal defect repaired when he was 5 years old. Has had no other problems with it. The hole did not even need a patch. The doctor said he closed it with about 3 or 4 stitches. He developed type I diabetes when he was about 13 years old. He wants to get a medical alert tatoo on his arm for his diabetes. What can I advise for him. Should he get one, or not?

	Answer by Dr.Rohit Agarwal (doctor) on Mon 03, Aug 2009 10:53pm: Dear, This tattoo is done for emergency conditions like accident when patient had to be given intra venous fluids or medicines immediately or, if he losses consciousness due to low blood sugar, as result of high insulin dose then one can make diagnosis immediately etc. I think he should get one.
