i am 62 with an underactive thyroid diagnosed 4 years ago.recently my gp has increased the dose from 100 to 150 daily.he admits now to doing this too quickly as this has resulted in horrendous side effects which he says will last at least 2 to 3 weeks.is this correct and why do i have to take any thyroxine at all now daily he has put me back on 100 if i have literally taken too high a dose.confused

Hello. You are receiving the thyroid supplementation for hypothyroidism. Your thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroid hormones for the body to function properly. Hence, you need supplements. Many researchers have tried to study the usefulness of excess thyroid supplements for a quicker and a better response. There have been equivocal results. While excess thyroid hormones may be helpful, there are some unwanted side effects that may come. In your case, this is precisely what has happened. The recovery from the side effects is variable. The time period depends on various factors including the body mass, duration of thyroxine supplementation, initial dose, etc. There are reports of patients recovering within a week to up to a month. Since you have a low functioning thyroid, you will need to continue taking the supplementation. You may now try and step up the dose gradually over a few weeks. Regards
