Hi. I am a 28 year old smoker and around 6 weeks ago i had a sore throat for a couple of days. upon checking my throat it was red and i noticed a small ulcer / bump on the back of my throat, on the pharynx. the sore throat soon cleared up but the bump / ulcer didnt, though it caused no pain. i kept an eye on it and after a month went to see my GP who tested for strep throat (which came back negative) and prescribed me penicillin. The Antibiotics had no effect so went back and she has referred me to a maxillo facial clinic to have this checked, she has also prescribed some hydrocortizone tablets which i have just finished and have had no effect, though its hard to say if they got to the right area as i could only suck them. Looking at my throat more closely i can see there are some other bumps, but there is the original one that seems redder than the rest. i have uploaded a photo and the first one i noticed is the top left, could what i see be cobblestioning? my hayfever has been no worse than usual and i have had no stuffy nose, though i do often feel like there is mucus running down my throat that i cant clear. no cough. in general my throat feels ok, but i do wake up with it feeling sore (and often with a blocked nose). i now have the feeling that there is a lump in my throat and occasional mild ear pain, though i am unsure of whether that is my mind playing tricks as i am prone to anxiety. the appointment for the referral is in a week and a half but i am driving myself crazy thinking that i have cancer!! though i will admit that i have quite severe health anxiety and i have felt the lump in the throat that i mentioned earler often over the past few years in times of anxiety. please could you advise what you think this could be, just so i can get through the time until my appointment.

Hi! I took a look at the picture you have uploaded and in all probability, you probably have a persisting sore throat or a gastric reflux or mucosal irritation due to smoking. While you await your appointment, you could take omeprazole empty stomach in the morning, take antacid gels after meals and try quit smoking. You could consult your doctor regarding this line of treatment. Avoid oily and spicy food, aerated drinks and alcohol as all these could irritate the mucosa. Hope these tips will help ease your symptoms while you wait for your appointment. Please feel free to ask anything else you may want to know. Take care!

Hi thank you so much for your reply..... so do you think that this is cobblestoning caused by one of those things that you have mentioned? and can you confirm that, from the photo, it doesnt look serious, like cancer? i dont seem to get heartburn often...... thank you

Nothing can be confirmed by just looking at a picture, but it is unlikely to be cancer!
