pimple on head giving me headache and sinus pain when I press it

I have a pimple like lump at the base of my skull on the left side just where it gets soft. When I touch it hurts all over my head and I can feel it in my sinuses. Its giving me a constant headache now for two days, especially on the left side behind my ear and down that side of my neck

Hi, Thank you very much for your question. From your description of symptoms, it appears to be a sebaceous cyst or cellulites or a lipoma at base of skull (occipital region). These conditions may cause nerve irritation in the cervical (neck) spine by compression and pain may be referred and perceived as occurring in the back of head, ear & neck. All these conditions are normally benign or harmless and do not grow unless irritated by finger or their growth may be very slow. Sebaceous cyst is a closed sac filled with semi solid material called sebum produced by sebaceous glands beneath the skin. Sometimes it gets infected and causes cellulites. On the other hand, lipoma is composed of fatty tissues and may be caused by uneven distribution of fat which gets deposited on isolated spots. Both of the conditions can be excised with simple surgical procedure and cellulites can be treated with excision or topical/oral antibiotics. I would recommend that you consult a surgeon or neurologist for a better insight of the situation. Hope this helps. Please do keep us posted for additional doubts. Take care & Regards!!!

Hello, Welcome to the forum. Dr Anurag has explained the possibilities of sebaceous cyst and lipoma very well. Another possibility which can present as such a soft swelling especially on the scalp is of a boil. A boil, also referred to as a skin abscess, is a localized infection deep in the skin. A boil generally starts as a reddened, tender area. Over time, the area becomes firm and hard. Eventually, the center of the abscess softens and becomes filled with pus. Finally, the pus "forms a head," which can be surgically opened or spontaneously drain out through the surface of the skin. Apply warm compresses on the bump and keep the area clean. Take some over the counter pain reliever and consult a doctor for examination and antibiotics prescription. If it is a sebaceous cyst which is infected or a boil which is not controlled by the topical antibiotics, then incision and drainage may be needed. I hope it helps. This painful pimple can be a boil or an abscess and for this you should apply warm compresses and take some non steroidal anti inflammatory pain killer like Ibuprofen.
