on the job injury a sexual assault which resulted in panic attacks

Asked by Unregistered on Thu 01, May 2008 10:15am :

I work with inmates and recently at the beginning of April I was sexually assaulted by an inmate. I have been seeing an appointed psychologist who sent me back to work on tuesday. On Tuesday and Yesterday I experienced the most horrific panic attacks in front of my co workers. Was it wise to send me back to work so soon? I am suppose to go back on Saturday. Will I be okay?

Good day. I'm sorry to hear what happened. It is very hard to judge even for a psychologist if when a person can be ready to face a setting from which he had a traumatic experience with. The best judge of that is the person himself or herself. In your case, the fact that you had the panic attack means that you are still not ready to be back in that setting. Another important question is, would you be ever ready to go back? This is a situation where you need to have a lengthy discussion with your psychologist. Adjusting to the situation may take some time but if the time never comes, then you might need to be assigned elsewhere. Another aspect that can be discussed is the use of medications to lessen the panic attacks, and these can be prescribed by a psychiatrist. You can inquire about having these medications before you go back to the work setting. I hope situations like these never happen again to anyone. Regards and God bless.
