Answer by Dr Bobby V, MD (doctor) on Sat 03, May 2008 01:29pm:

Hi, The "due-date" that you are asking about, is called "expected date of delivery (EDD)" in medical parlance. This is calculated based upon the last menstrual period (LMP). In case the LMP cannot be recalled with accuracy, then ultrasound measurements are made to ascertain the fetal maturity, and an EDD is estimated. Both methods are fairly accurate.

Hi. Dr. Bobby was right. Expected date of delivery (EDD) is a guideline, not an exact science. The due date is calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period, not from the actual date of conception. You can calculate 40 weeks after the marked date. This will be your expected date of delivery. For easier calculation, pregnancy calculator dates are available online. However, if she has irregular cycles and could not remember the exact date, her EDD will be based from the maturity findings of the baby via ultrasound.

Pretty accurate but she's best waiting until her 20 week scan coz this can tell u for definate how far gone she is :)
