Hi Welcome to the AMD forum! The symptoms that you are having can be due to stomatitis. Irritation and fissuring in the corners of the lips is termed angular stomatitis. It can also extend to lips and area around it resulting in swollen, reddened, painful lips. Most common causes are iron deficiency anemia, or vitamin B deficiencies. Try taking some iron supplements and multivitamins for some days and see if the symptoms persist. They can also be caused by allergies and infections. You could either be suffering from contact dermatitis or from allergy to some food. You should get an allergy test done, either a skin test or RAST, to know what you are allergic to. Contact dermatitis could be due to tooth pastes, mouth cleansers, spoons, cups, glasses, food items, cosmetics, shampoos, etc, basically anything that comes in contact with your lips. Another possibility is eczema. Herpes infection is another possibility if there is a history of kissing or sexual contact (can get aggravated in presence of vitamin deficiencies, dry cracked lips, infections etc). Cool moist compress, calamine lotion, oral anti histamines etc are helpful if allergy or dermatitis or eczema is suspected. Taking a bland diet, not too hot and avoiding spicy food will help. If you can pinpoint what started these symptoms, these home remedies may help. The correct treatment will depend on the correct diagnosis. You can try the enumerated home remedies. If they do not help, consult your PCP. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

The area around your mouth to be chapped and swollen, itchy chapped lips caused eczema or dermatitis. Try to spare yourself allergens of it.

For two days the corners of my mouth have been cracked and painful, then today when I wake up my mouth/lips are swollen, painful and feel burned or severely chapped. My concern is that for about 6 weeks my husband, adult daughter and myself have begun juicing veggies to get more nutrients. While the greens I add to the juice vary from day to day, carrots and beets have been a constant. My daughter's palm's are very orange today and I've got this lip thing going on. My husband, who has liver cancer, is pretty much the same is suffering no strange symptoms.
