	Answer by Dr Bhupinder K, MD (doctor) on Tue 17, Nov 2009 08:32pm: Hello, Welcome to the AMD forum of doctors. Both atenolol and bisoprolol are synthetic beta blocker antihypertensives. The starting dose of atenolol is usually 50 mg which is equivalent to a starting dose of bisoprolol of 5 mg. But the dose of bisoprolol is individualized to the needs of the patient. In some patients, 2.5 mg may be an appropriate starting dose. However then it becomes equivalent to 25 mg of atenolol. Since you are having joint and muscle pains esp. after staring bisoprolol, so I must tell you that arthralgia, muscle and joint pains and muscle cramps are frequent side effects of this drug. There are a host of other side effects like dry mouth, dizziness, palpitations, hypotension, GI upset, coughing and bronchitis. We cannot stop this drug all of a sudden because of its withdrawl effects, so this should be changed to some other beta blocker or antihypertensive drug. My sincere advice would be to consult your treating cardiologist and discuss about the joint pains that you are having. An appropriate decision can be taken by him after a complete physical examination only. I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep me posted in case you have any additional doubts. While both atenolol and bisoprolol are betablockers, they are not the same drugs. What I mean by that is they are not generic versions of each other. Hence a direct comparison cannot be made between their doses. Despite this Dr Bhupinder has advised you well of the possible co-relation between their doses. This co-relation may or may not hold true. So as she said, consult your cardiologist regarding this. If atenolol was suiting you, probably you could go back to it. Hope this helps.
