confused about kidney stones

Iam confused and worried all at the same time. I cant seem to get an answer that I feel is suitable from the Doctors I have seen. I have NO history of stones, and the 1st one popped up on 10/08, only 2mm but was blocked and I was told would pass by itself. Well I was still having dull lower back pains and discomfort in my abdomen, so had another CT in March. the 2mm stone grew to 6mm, and I also had a 3mm and a 4mm. Went to a urologist and he said that they are not blocking anything so this shouldnt be causing my pain. okay, so meanwhile Im dealing with what feels like back labor at times,, and in June went to urgent care center, had blood in urine...had yet another CT, Doctor read results as multiple kidney stones, and sent me to a Nephrologist, where he said that the stones are embedded in my kidney wall. the report showed about 6 stones that varied in size from 5mm or less. But I explained that I am usually having this aching, throbbing like pain in my lower back area, where my kidneys are....so he wants to run lab work..Meanwhile no one is answering my ?'s. If these stones are just sitting there, obviously they are increasing, so what can be done to remove them, besides wait to pass stones that are not going to pass on their own. And to top it all off, I am having problems urinating. When it feels like I really have to go, i have to sit there for a few minutes and kinda push for the urine to come out. No burning, cloudiness or anything like that. can you please give me some better insight to my problem?

Hi there. I understand your concern. Most of the stones originates in the kidney, & they proceed distally, creating various degrees of urinary obstruction. Clinical symptoms vary from person to person, but pain does not correlate with size of the stone. Smaller stones are managed conservatively. But stones varying from 1.5-2 cm & non impacted upper ureteric stones are treated with extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy. This is the commonest procedure being followed all over the world. Procedure usually lasts for about 45 minutes. For stones larger than 2.5 cm are treated with Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy, which is a laparoscopic procedure. For resistant cases which cannot be treated by above methods open surgical method is approached. There is no need to panic & I wish you all the best. Take care.
