tonisillitis

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 13; asthmatic without episodes, general good health with the yearly winter infection of bronchitis; Relevant drugs:625mg of co-amoxiclav (2 times daily) and 400mg ibuprofen (every 6 hours) ) on Tue 14, Oct 2008 01:07am

My daughter was diagnosed with tonisillitis just under 48 hours ago. I started the co-amoxiclav immediately. She has had a fever for 4 days ranging from 102-103.6 which I have been giving ibuprofen to help keep under control. Naturally, every time the medicine wears off the fever is back. How long should a fever this high keep running? Shouldn't it have broken by now?

Answer by Dr Rowena S, MD  on Thu 16, Oct 2008 04:37am:

Hi, How is your daughter? The fever usually breaks after 3-4 days of antibiotic treatment. This is assuming that the antibiotic is effective and the body is responding. It is important that the ibuprofen is taken round-the-clock every 6 hours to ensure its effectiveness. Tepid sponge bath may also be helpful in controlling the fever. Treatments of tonsillitis consist of pain management medications and lozenges. If the tonsillitis is caused by bacteria, antibiotics are prescribed. It is important to finish the full course of antibiotics to prevent resistance to this medication. Additionally, gargling with a solution of warm water and salt may reduce pain and swelling. Take care and regards.
