My very good friend just lost her baby. She was 22 1/2 weeks, when she developed an infection in her uterus, which made her go into labor. The doctor told her from the start that the baby was perfectly healthy, but would be too small to survive. He told her the baby wouldn't even survive the delivery.- The baby did survive the delivery. Im unsure of her weight because they didn't weigh her, but her expected weight was 1 1/2lbs. Immediately after the delivery, the baby was handed to the mother and told she could be with the baby until she died. The baby died 2 hours later. My question is, isn't there more that could have been done for the baby? She was breathing, had a beating heart, but obviously too small and weak to do it all on her own. I know a lot of times with premature babies, they will place them in incubators or something. Why wasn't this done for this child? Is there some obvious reason why this doctor didn't do more? Once again the baby was healthy, just small. I have another friend who had a baby, and when the baby was born she weighed 1lb 6oz. The doctors did everything they could to save her, so why not this time? Any suggestions, advice, or opinions would be greatly appreciated. The mother, her family and I, are all grieving for the loss of this beautiful child, whom we feel was denied her chance at life. We just want some answers, and the doctor involved doesn't seem to have any for us, except that she was too small to survive.

Baby dies 2 hours after delivery, medical negligence? - answer

Hi, Premature babies are babies born between 24 weeks and 37weeks of gestation. Babies born before 24 weeks of gestation are termed asextremely premature babies. The general consensus is not to put babies less than24 weeks subject to the trauma of invasive procedures as death is almostinevitable in these cases. An extremely small number of babies who survive willsuffer from severe disabilities for the rest of their lives. Hope this answersyour question. Take care.
