If a nurse bent a three week old baby's two wrist could it cause fracture or broken bone?Could this also cause rickets? The nurse said that the baby's bones are young and they will grow back is that true? Do you think the doctor/hospital may just be trying to cover their tracks? Can rickets even be formed in the hand or does it mostly appear in the foot?

Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Thu 24, Jul 2008 01:28am:

Hi, How are you? Yes twisting a three week old baby’s wrist can cause fracture since the bones of a three week old baby are very soft. Rickets on the other hand is caused by deficiency of Vitamin D and calcium. A bone fracture cannot cause rickets but bones affected by rickets are more prone to fractures. Hope this helps!
