I need an answer to these abdominal Charlie Horses. I get these in my abdomen at specific times: 1. coughing 2. sneezing 3. moving the wrong way 4. bending over to tie my shoes, 5. using the bathroom usually if I have to push. I would rate the pain at 10. Worse than childbirth. There is literally a fist popping out of my adnominal wall. You can see it, and you can feel it. It is usually on the left side under the rib cage towards the center. However I have had it happen in other areas. Yesterday I had one there and then I had one on the right side lower that radiated right below the belly button. I think I will start documenting where and when. The only way to get it out is to stand up, bend backwards so I am stretching out my stomach muscles. If I am stuck (like in the backseat of a car like yesterday). I am in big trouble and the ?locked? cramp feeling will just continue. The pain is so intense I feel like I could black out! Once I get it under control the area is sore for a day or 2. Also I feel very susceptible during this time for it to happen again. The onset feels like it could happen very easily. I have a few theories after my research. 1. Weak core strength or 2. IBS this statement I found on the internet interested me 3. I understand there are ligaments managing the position of organs along with the fascia that become "hooked" in areas so in certain positions a spasm is caused. Key factors: Diagnosed with IBS, colonoscopy done 4 years ago showed some very slight beginnings of ulcers Nissen fundoplication 2001 for a hiatel hernia Gall bladder removal at the same time 2001 2002 repeat of the nissen fundoplication because 1st dr did it too tight Lost about 100 pounds during these 2 years 2006 abdominal tummy tuck.. full procedure with muscle repair and cut from hip to hip 1990 laparoscopy to burn out endometriosis Female, 38, about 40 pounds overweight now Ok diet Walker Zoloft 100 mg daily This started after my tummy tuck in 2006 and at this time I was thin and in shape. Hello After reading your past surgical history and your symptoms, I recognize that Dr Mathur has outlined the possible causes to a great effect. As you mentioned about the severity of the pain which you describe 10/10! Its most likely due to a nerve injury during previous surgeries which causes inflammatory and immune reactions to the damaged axons which in turn causes release of neurotransmitters that act locally and in the spinal cord to produce hypersensitivity. This explains the intensity of pain you are having. Although adhesions are the commonest complication after surgery to cause pain but the severity which you have described is somewhat classic for neurological pain (due to nerve injury). IBS is another possibility but again the pain here is less intensified. At this stage you can definitely consult a gastroenterologist for a proper diagnosis and also I would suggest to visit a pain clinic to get help to relieve your pain. I hope you will get better soon. Keep posted. Good Bye.

I've got the same kind of pain, and I've not had any surgeries. The pain when the Charlie horse is happening is horrible, but the real problem is after the Charlie horse is over, and every time you breathe, it hurts where the Charlie horse was. This has been going on for several days now. I also have a large rope-type knot (about 6 inches long by about 2 inches wide) where the Charlie Horse was.

Hi! Since there is a knot where the pain was, and the pain was terrible, possibility of a hernia should be looked into depending on the site of the knot-umbilical, paraumbilical or epigastric. Please discuss with your doctor. Take care!

I have been having similar type pain, sudden and pain lower center and lower right lower quad, no precipitating factors, comes on 8/10, lasting 3-8 secs and gone. After 5 days and getting worst went to er and nothing. Cat scan was negative for appendix, ovaries were fine, and no Constipation, blood work was also completely fine. My friends family and co workers are concerned... And I would just Luke to know what's going on. I'm 24 female, healthy, no prev operations. Any ideas?

I recently started to have a fullness on both sided below my rib cage. Now have had muscle spasm or Charlie horse in a muscle right below left rid cage. Very painful.

This happens to me, whenever I get into the passenger seat after a day of ups and downs and so on. Always on 2 hour or so road trips. Fine on the drive there, and fine when Im doing what Im doing at the destination. As soon as I get in the front seat, and we are on return trip home, the charlie horse, level 10 pains across my stomach are horrid!!! My Dr said it could be because of my back problems. But Im fine as I said, on the trip to destination. I go into a panic, and ask my husband to pull over. I cannot get out of the car fast enough. I'm sweating, and become claustrophobic being inside the car, and at the thought of having this pain for the trip home. If I can lay flat on my stomach for an hour or so, then get back in the car to go home, Im fine. Next day area where cramping was is very sore. Always happens in the car. No where else. Its ridiculous.
