Can a high fiber, low fat diet cause constipation?

Asked by gwincj (Female; 22 ) on Thu 03, Dec 2009 09:51am

Can a high fiber, low fat diet cause constipation? I usually have a bowel movement at least once a day, but I have not gone in the past three days. I have not experienced any discomfort or anything, I've simply noticed that I haven't gone to the restroom. I eat mostly fruits and vegetables (raw). I eat about two bowls of raw spinach a day. I eat some meats- mainly turkey and grilled chicken. I eat a lot of lentils for protein. I do not drink a lot of water, but I drink at least 16 ounces a day. I have not had any soft drinks for at least a month. I drink a cup of orange juice when I don't want water, but since I've been constipated (if that's even the case) I've been drinking water. What's wrong?

Answer by Dr Rowena S, MD (doctor) on Fri 04, Dec 2009 10:09am:

Hi, How are you? Constipation is defined as infrequent bowel movement (three times or fewer per week), difficulty during defecation or the sensation of incomplete bowel movement. Generally, diet rich in fiber is not a cause for constipation. Other causes that we should consider are medications you may be taking, problem with the peristaltic action of the intestines which is attributed to hypothyroidism, hypokalemia, injury, lactose intolerance, anatomial and functional problems. If it persists, despite eating fiber rich food and drinkin plenty of fluids, have this evaluated further for proper management. Take care and do keep us posted.
