Answer by Dr. A. Srivastava (doctor) on Wed 18, Nov 2009 10:14pm:

Hi Melissa, Your symptoms can have various possibilities such as post menopausal osteoporosis, arthritis, other joint related inflammatory conditions like sinovitis etc leading to joint pain. The swelling in the hand could be either as part of same problem or due to deep vein thrombosis or any other vascular changes. These entire problems need an investigation before prescribing any medication therefore I would advice to consult your GP/ orthopedician in such case. Until then you may use topical/oral pain-relievers available over the counter. Especially, I would advice you to take Lortab only upon prescription as it is an opioid medicine which needs a doctor's prescription due to various side-effects and withdrawal symptoms. Hope this helps.
