chlamydia

Asked by tokyo 038; healthy ) on Thu 23, Jul 2009 09:22am

A 38 year old who has been trying to get pregnant for 3 plus years just found out that she has Chlamydia and apparently has had for 10 years. What is the procedure for determining if or how much damage has been done? Also currently living in Japan and have had some problems finding doctors that seem to care. Is it possible for a responsible reproductive specialist not to detect Chlamydia while treating a patient for 18 mos? It was a second Dr. who informed her after the initial exam. In regards to this, what questions should be asked of future doctors in a country where full disclosure is not the norm? thanks

Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Thu 23, Jul 2009 09:37am:

Chlamydia infections are asymptomatic in majority of women so the disease often goes undetected for many years. The infection if persistent for a long time can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which can lead to infertility. A reproductive specialist should be able to detect the infection in presence of symptoms. It is important to check with the doctor what the extent of damage is and the treatment should be initiated at the earliest.
