Bloody nipple discharge - 25 years old with history of breast cancer - scared I have breast cancer

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 25; 2 children, breast fed one of them. no medications, prolactin test negative; Relevant drugs:none ) on Wed 29, Oct 2008 11:14pm

I have had drainage from my right breast only and it was tested positive for blood, although my doctor didn't feel any lumps. My mom had breast cancer, so I'm pretty worried about this. I'm only 25 years old. I have researched online and came up with two possible causes - intraductal papilloma and breast cancer, both are uncommon in women my age. Is there anything else that could be causing this? What are my chances of having cancer?

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD (doctor) on Wed 29, Oct 2008 11:52pm:

Hi there. The most common reason for this bloody breast discharge is that of benign breast duct papillomas, and cancer would only account for a minority especially in your age group. Other possible causes would include infection such as that of bacterial mastitis. I would suggest that you have this worked up through mammograms, ultrasounds, or ductograms to localize the problem. Surgery for papillomas is usually curative. I believe the odds are still in your favor as the reasons behind this is most likely benign. Have this worked up as soon as possible and I wish you all the best. Regards and God bless.
