Hi,
Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) can cause a host of developmental abnormalities, with the majority targeting the
nervous system.
Children with FAS (as a consequence of pregnant mothers' drinking alcohol) are subjected to an unfriendly
intrauterine environment and do not develop well in gestation. They may present with Down's syndrome or
spina bifida. Additional complications such as intrauterine growth retardation, abnormalities of the central,
autonomous, and peripheral nervous system, skeletal abnormalities, visual problems, behavioral problems,
learning disabilities, impedance of fine motor skills, delayed attainment of developmental milestones, heart
murmurs due to cardiac abnormalities, difficulty ion social adjustment, etc., have also been identified
definitively as being associated with FAS.
There is no cure for FAS though there are treatment modalities that focus on trying to correct the damage at
developmental, neurobehavioral, and public health levels.
