dent on head

Asked by missmelissa05 (Female; 20; Slight anemia, acid reflux, seasonal allergies and kidney infection a year ago; Relevant drugs:Nexium and birth control ) on Wed 26, Aug 2009 05:16pm

Hello. A few months ago I had a sever headache unlike any I've had before. I felt my head and noticed a dent in the area I was having pain. I've never had head trauma of any kind. I continued to get headaches. They start as a warm achey sensation, always in the same spot. Also the same spot as the dent. When my head starts to hurt the scalp in that area is warm to the touch and the dent seems to feel more defined. Please tell me what this could be. I am so afraid.

Hi Welcome to the forum! Is the dent in the center of the head? If so, this is the point where all the skull bones fuse on the top of the skull and this is a very vulnerable point. It is also most sensitive to pressure changes inside the skull. If the headaches are felt worse in the morning or in the evening or night, then probably what you have is benign intracranial hypertension (BIH). This happens due to abnormal CSF (the fluid around brain) absorption. The headache is aggravated by straining, coughing or a change in position. Hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, adrenal insufficiency are a few things I would recommend you get investigated for. These can precipitate BIH. A spinal tap is a must both to diagnose the condition and to treat it. Alternatively it could be a tension headache, causing a dent or slight indentation at the center of the head. Please consult an internal medicine specialist or a neurologist for this. Hope this helps. Take care!

I have noticed my memory failing me at times and i have headaches about 3 timeess a week. I am 23 never had head trama before. Im not sure whats happening. Im scared to go to tha dr.

Comment by Dr.Kokil Mathur on Thu 23, Sep 2010 01:44am:
Hi Charlotte! As I wrote earlier, it can be due to benign intracranial hypertension. Other than that if you have chronic sinusitis then indentation can develop due to mucoceles and is mainly in the frontal bone. Loss of fat under skin of scalp can also be a possibility due to prolonged infection. Please get this checked. It will help in the long run. Take care!

Hi Dr Mathur, my 3 year old has a dent on the back of his head, (about 2 in x 2 inches) towards the left side. I just noticed it and am not sure how long its been there. He says his head doesnt hurt and he's not behaving differently, what do you think it could be?

Comment by Dr.Kokil Mathur on Sun 17, Oct 2010 04:36pm:
Hi! A dent on the scalp can be a part of the skull structure. It can also be due to an old injury with loss of fat tissue in the area. Since your son is not showing any signs of pressure like vomiting, losing consciousness, headache, behavior changes etc, It is unlikely to be anything serious. When you next take him to a pediatrician get this checked out. In all probability his skull is made that way. Take care!

I have a dent on the left side of my head toward the back. It itches around the area and hurts sometimes. Could this be a sign of a aneurism?? Someone told me that a dent in your head can mean that?

Comment by Dr.Kokil Mathur on Sun 24, Oct 2010 09:51am:
Hi! A dent in the side of head that itches and pains can be dermatitis especially seborrhagic dermatitis, eczema, hair follicle infection or dryness. All this can cause a dent due to loss of fluids and underlying fat. Get this investigated by a skin specialist. Take care!

Comment by Hannah on Sun 24, Oct 2010 05:52pm:
Do you think that this is really serious???

Comment by Dr Kokil Mathur on Sun 24, Oct 2010 07:58pm:
Probably no, but get this investigated.

Comment by Stephanie on Mon 25, Oct 2010 06:14pm:
Hi Dr. Mathur, I also have an dent on my head. But it seems different than what is posted here. It is on the right front part of my scalp doesn't hurt or itch. I noticed it about 6 months ago but it always has worried me. My dad has dementia along with other health issues as does my mom. I am 32 so I know its not a soft spot like children have when they are born. Please any insight?? thanks!!

Comment by Dr.Kokil Mathur on Sat 20, Nov 2010 06:05pm:
Hi Stephanie! If the dent was not there earlier and has appeared only 6 months earlier, then this could be due to a mucocele in the frontal bone. It can even be due to localized loss of fat. An X-ray of the skull should be done. Take care!

Hi guys, I have several dents appearing on my scalp in the space of two months. One is right in the middle back of my head. Two is right on opposite sides on the top side of my head and there is two on the bottom right of my head near my hairline. Not sure why this is occurring. I went and saw my Doctor (I had only two dents then) and had a CT Scan and the scan came back all clear with the bone structure unremarkable. The Doctor said to not worry about it. I am still concerned on why this is still happening. I am scared that more and more dents will form and my skull will be full of dents and because of my short hair cut they will become visible. The dents seem more pronounced in the evenings and the more I poke and prod my scalp at the dents ... the deeper they get...the dents also pulse and seem to form wherever i press with my finger...I feel I am getting very paranoid about this...Can anyone help me please..

Hi I'm 14 years old and a hypocondriact. I have found a small dent on my head near my hairline on the right side. It is sensitive to the touch and my head has been itchy recently. I suffer from terrible eczema and was wondering ifbthis could have to do with it. Please help, I worry myself to tears over things like this, do I need to see a doctor because my mom thinks I'm just whiny and worrying for nothing.

My hair stylist noticed a small patch of hair missing on the right middle side of my head and a red circle. I don't remember hitting my head, but with all the bikes hanging in the garage and 3 kids, I ignore anytime I get hurt. Anyway i went to my internist and steroids were injected in the bald spot. Folicles grew back slowly, but 2 months later and I have a dent in that same spot! Going to see a dermatologist, but I am very concerned. All my bloodwork is normal, hormones in check, this is why I am concerned!

Hello, DOctor It was the night before where i noticed my head was starting to hurt, in the morning i felt the same pain, i touched my head in the back on the lower left side, and there was a dent, I don't know exactly how long it is, but it really scares me, and can i get concussion, or will i become autistic? I'm really scared.

I have noticed a debt across the top of my skull. Even I press or mess around touching that area it feels uncomfortable. It feels like putting Ice on cold skin / freezer burn but that feeling is only when I touch it. I have noticed it until last week. I feel like I have pressure bc my ears give a swish sound. I I do have a herniation on my c 4 c5 area. I have become very moody but feel it might be ones related. I also have spasms in near my head and legs. What could this be?

Hi every body I am a 32 year old male I've been having some issues as described on other posts my left side started with dents they are itchy there is some pain to it as well but now I do have them on both sides but more noticeable on the left. I went to a dermatologist and they said that they think it is cutis verticis gyrata. If Dr.Kokil Mathur can please give an answer to this or any other Dr. on the Forum or perhaps a person with this situation how it started and what are they doing to live with it any thing that could help me.

I have a dent in the crown of my head, I first noticed it in august when it first started forming. I get headaches like I've never had before, it's hard for me to get up in the mornings. At the top part of the dent I noticed there is a soft spot. I haven't gone to the doctor, I'm honestly scared too. I used to get headaches everyday. The headaches I get are severe I can't concentrate at all, it's just horrible I would really appreciate some feedback in why or what this could possible be. Please and thank you.
