Hi.
I just have some clarifications. How old are you? Can you palpate any breast mass? Can you see changes in
the breast like asymmetry, dimpling, or nipple changes? Are you experiencing breast pain? Was a breast
ultrasound done?
For a palpable mass, there is a need to determine whether the mass is cystic or solid. Needle aspiration can
be done. The character of the aspirate can help decide whether to undergo further treatment or not. If the
aspirate is a bloody fluid or if there is a persistent mass after aspiration, an excision biopsy can then be
performed and the specimen sent for histopathological evaluation. A solid mass can be considered for
excision biopsy or a core needle biopsy.
For a non palpable mass (seen only in the mammography), core needle biopsy can help establish the diagnosis.
If the biopsy turns out to be negative, follow-up mammography can be done after 6 months. On the other hand,
if it turns out to be positive, surgical intervention is then needed.
