bowel cancer - Survival rate for lung cancer

Asked by Unregistered on Sat 05, Apr 2008 03:34pm :

my husband had surgery for lung cancer 18 months ago, the cancer was removed, six weeks ago he was rushed into hospital as his bowel had burst. When he went for surgery, they removed a large tumour from his bowel, his small bowel was removed and part of the large bowel. We are just asking about survival rates or time spans we were told when he had his lung sugery that if he were to get cancer again it would probably be within 5 yrs (it was 18mths)

Hi Lisa. How is your husband doing? Can you remember the histology of the lung cancer based on the pathology report? What is stage of the disease? Your husband underwent surgery to the lung to remove the tumor so I’m assuming the lung cancer is at early stage that rendered it operable. Did he undergo further treatment after surgery? What is the pathology report of the bowel tumor removed? Is it cancer? If the bowel tumor turned out to be cancer, there are two possibilities in your husband’s case. First, the bowel cancer may be related to the lung cancer especially when the histology is the same. But the bowel is not a common site of recurrence of lung cancer. Second, there is also a possibility that there are two primary sites of cancer: lung and bowel. In both scenarios, further treatment may be required to decrease the risk of both local and distant recurrence.
