bone or neck - Pea size know on Collar bone: Can this be some kink of cancer

Asked by Unregistered on Fri 04, Apr 2008 12:07am

i have a pea size knot on my collar bone in the middle where the bone turns to a u. it is hard and feels like the bone is growing this knot. it doesn't hurt or move it just sticks out and is pointed and looks weird and hasn't grown. so i cant wear anything lower than my collar bone line. i'm not sure if i hit a box on my collar bone when i was moving something or what could this be. i am thin so you can really see the knot i am 49 years old. i havent been to the doctor cuz it doesn't hurt or anything and i have had it for a while now. should i be worried or not.could this be some kink of cancer, can you see cancer? thank you

Answer by Dr Dennis S, MD (doctor) on Fri 04, Apr 2008 11:52am:

Hi. How long have you noticed the knot on your collar bone or clavicle? By your description, it seems that the knot is part of the collar bone. It would be hard to tell exactly whether the knot you have on your collar bone is cancerous or not. Since there may be a history of trauma as you mentioned, a fracture on the collar bone may have resulted causing the deformity. Fracture of the collar bone most commonly occurs on the center, and is associated with pain and tenderness. Other consideration would be a bone tumor (both benign and malignant). What you can do now is to have an xray done on the collar bone. If the xray finding is suggestive of bone cancer, other imaging modalities can be done like a bone scan. Biopsy can then confirm if the bone tumor is malignant or not.
