blood vaginal discharge unrelated to menstrual cycle

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 21; USA; no significant events; Relevant drugs:none taken ) on Mon 18, Aug 2008 07:35pm

Hi, I've recently been having some spotting (enough to cover half a pantyliner) for two weeks now. The vaginal discharge ranges from bright red blood to light brown and is often a "egg-white" type of consistency. I was supposed to have my menstrual cycle a week ago, but instead I just had the spotting, which fluctuates in amount every few days. (ie: spotting for a few days, then nothing for 2 days, then the spotting returns). The discharge has no foul odor and I have not had any pain of fever. I am 21 years old, not on birth control, never been pregnant, not sexually active and no history of STDs. My periods have been occuring on a regular schedule and although I've had spotting before (last only a few days), I've never had it for this long. Should I be concerned?

Hi, I am glad that you have posted your question and we will try and help you. It appears that you have missed/are missing a period and are instead having some bleeding which may also be termed as Spotting. Looking at the information provided in your post, it appears that you may have one of the following reasons for the spotting- stress, hormonal changes, injuries (trauma, infections, or polyp etc.), thyroid abnormalities, etc., This is not an exhaustive list and there may be other causes for this condition. A doctor will have to perform an examination and some tests to find the true nature of this condition. I hope I have helped you a bit. please let me know if you may ahve any further queries/need help.
